Great Gospel
Cetra? That some kinda disease?
Barret

Angelic symbolism presents in FFVII during the whole story. However, in fact, the word "angel" is mentioned in the Game only twice: when Cloud is delirious in the hospital of Mideel and when Gast speaks about his unborn daughter. In FFVII world there is not any religion, known in our world. The only church we see is abandoned and there are not any attributes of any religion. The only religiously-philosophic conception, known in the context of the story, is based on Bugenhagen's "The Study of Planet Life" and leads its followers to the way of life, abilities and credo of Cetra. Then, it is more interesting to find out why in Aerith's "Great Gospel" angels appears, why Sephiroth is a "One Winged Angel", why there is the statue of angel in MIE and why professor Gast calls Aerith "angel". What the notion "angel" means for the world of FFVII?

Angel, that is winged, developed, clarified and powerfull creature, - one of the most ancient symbols witch meaning is saved to present day in every religion that has an attribute with the same name. If we apply to mythology, to the legends far more ancient than Christianity and Islam that both adopted the symbol "angel", we meet mentions of people, who can fly, in antique texts, in Slavic fairy-tales, Asian legends. For example, ancient Greek mythology has a story that Hermes receives (or, as a variant, steals) wings and then attaches them to his shoes. He receives them from mysterious Hyperboreans living at the North Pole. According to this one and similar legends and also to the information provided by "the Promised Land" article we can draw a conclusion: angels in the world of FFVII are Cetra . This conclusion is also approved by the fact that we see wings on Jenova , and from Ifalna's story we know that "It looked like... our... our mothers... and our brothers. <...> He first approached as a friend..." . That is, Jenova, with her ability to change its look , started to look like Cetra and authenticity of this mask required presence of wings. Moreover, Jenova was considered by Gast as a specimen of Cetra, and the statue blocking access to Jenova's sarcophagus is also winged . This is an evidence of the fact, that inside conception of the current race about Cetra, the presence of wings also exists.

Let's examine the conceptual aspect of the fact that angels are reminder or mention about Cetra. As we remember, the race, living now on the Planet, is the part of Cetra, that preferred calm settled life to travels and because of that lost its harmony with space Lifestream and abilities proceeded from this harmony (like talking with the Planet). Exactly this part of Cetra deviated from the confrontation against Jenova and survived, at the time that other Cetra sacrificed themselves . With time, for the new race their pre-ancestors, able to fly, became a symbol of supreme, powerful creatures and spiritual rise of a man became a search of the same origin that is inherent to the winged. Speaking scientifically it is a search of angelic origin, reaching the stage of angelomorphosis (mental likeness with angel). It corresponds to the canons of "the Study of Planet Life" - to develop to the level of Cetra - and to the global story where the race come from Cetra-traitors pays its debts to its ancestors and joins them in Lifestream.

This theory explains each appearance of angelic symbolism in the Game of AC. During the limit Aerith calls her ancestors - Cetra - and angels as an image of heard Gospel appears. Sephiroth became Cetra-like when showed to the race of traitors by his unprecedented destiny the way of redemption and thereby fulfilled the prophecy from the ancient legend . In AC "Sephiroth" has black wing - Jenova can imitate appearance, but white angelic wings of Cetra are unattainable for her. Marlen looks at the statue of angel in MIE and asks: "Please, don't take Denzel". Who can she ask about such thing if, as it was mentioned before, in FFVII there are not any religion or any idea about life after death except "gone to the Planet" or about world inaccessible for people except Lifestream? Professor Gast been studied Cetra and married one of them calls his daughter-Cetra, a treasure of a cosmic scale , with the word that means very much for him.

In that way we see, that angels are not accidental background symbol and not an allegory with some religious canon but a competent fact of the story referring players to the history of real world and discovering for them new information about Cetra.
